My journey for the AR-15 safety device began over 5 years ago with the interest and goal to make the platform safe, secure, and provide the owner the confidence that an unintended user will not involve the owner’s weapon in a mishap, or used in a crime if stolen. The choices available were all easily defeatable with any common tool found in the garage.
I designed and produced a number of prototypes and ultimately achieved what you see available now: a magazine containing a breach block that cannot be removed without my proprietary key (as has been tested and proven by HP White laboratories). The magazine retention portion of the lock is a sophisticated design with two .030 stainless steel pins located in the outer sleeve that engage the inner nut which is threaded onto the magazine catch. This design ensures it cannot be picked or defeated and you must have the key supplied with each device to unlock the magazine retention system.
The CA DOJ reviewed my design in June 2016 and I was asked to provide a sample of the device along with a copy of the installation instructions for review. Both my device and the instructions were approved as submitted. Additionally, the instructions clearly state that "removal of the magazine by the key functionally disables the feeding system”. As you know, the feeding system is a key component of any semi-automatic firearm action.
Then comes the new legislation signed July 1, 2016 and effective Jan 1, 2017 that redefines an assault weapon to be any center-fire semi-auto with a removable magazine that is removable “without disassembly of the firearm action” (SB880).
It was never my intent to create a device solely to comply with any such legislation. I simply wanted to create a safety device for the most influential weapon to hit the industry since the 1911. It was not designed to allow for "timed magazine swaps" or back-to-back magazine employment. In my humble opinion, it is the finest safety device available AND approved in writing by the CA DOJ.
The fact that we detailed the disassembly of the firearm feeding system when using the PT-AR LOK was an honest and sincere effort to ensure the owner understood what would occur when the device is used.
So, I welcome 2017 along with the challenges presented in our state with the new regulations. My intent has, and always will be, to create and build the most accurate, dependable, and SAFE firearms available.
